THE HOUSE MUSEUM “STANZE AL GENIO” AND THE MAIOLICA COLLECTION

27Jan

A blast from the past in the heart of Palermo: inside the eighteenth-century rooms of Palazzo Torre Piraino in via Garibaldi stands the house-museum “Stanze al Genio”, born in 2008 with the purpose to make available to the public a rich collection of antique tiles collected in over thirty years and still growing.

In these charming rooms there are in fact exposed nearly 5000 kind of tiles from the late sixteenth up to the early twentieth century, a smaller collection of vintage stationery, contemporary ceramics and modern objects.

The exhibition area is divided into eight rooms: the entrance hall, the neo-classical hall (for the eighteenth-century decorations), the flower room (for the nineteenth century decorations) the Burgio’s room, the inks’ room, the vases’ room, the dining room and the liberty room. The exposure of majolica tiles is divided by age and for production centers, especially Campania and Sicily.

The main rooms of the historic building still keep the flooring and the original frescoes of the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century. You can also admire a compartment reserved for contemporary ceramics and antique toys.
